Dunes are one of the unique natural beauties. There are many great and spectacular dunes. They are not only towering and like mountains but also vast and like small villages.
The Great Dune of Pyla
The Great Dune of Pyla, also called Pila, is the highest dune in Europe, near Aquitaine, southwestern France. It is situated on the entrance to Arcachon Bay and it contains 196 million cubic feet of sand. Pyla dune is 107m high above the sea level, 3km long and 500m wide. In January, 2009, in a storm, the strong winds whose speed is 175km / h destroyed this dune.
Mingsha Shan is located in Taklamakan Desert, China. In English, “mingsha shan” means ” echo sand mountain.” The highest dunes are here supposedly high 1.725m above the sea level.
Taklamakan Desert stretches over 337 000 km2 and it is one of the deserts that have the largest shifts. 85% of the desert is made up of the moving sand dunes, which are crescent-shaped and hundreds of feet high.
Sanctuary and National Park Great Sand Dunes in Colorado, which are “home” of the highest sand dunes in North America, are called Star Dune. They are about 230m high. The park also has large sand dunes and it has experienced 12,000 years old. The sand dunes here change regularly shapes every day by the impact of the west wind.
Mount Tempest, located at the altitude of 280 meters, in Moreton Island, Australia, is regarded as the highest sand dune on earth. Standing on the sand dune, visitors can watch the whole scene of surrounding coastline.
Big Daddy and Dune 7
Big Daddy is the name of one of the most famous dunes in Sossusvlei, Namibia. It also is one of the highest sand dunes with a height of 325m and has longevity of 5 million years. One other dune in the desert Namibia is Dune 7 with a height of 383m. It was named because it is 7th dune from the river Tsauchab.
Isaouane-n-Tifernine Sand Sea
Isaouane-n-Tifernine Sand Sea is located in the middle east of Algeria. These dunes have a height of about 565m and the wavelength of 5km. They are listed in the list of world’s highest sand dunes.
Rig-e Yalan Dune
Standing at a height of 470m, giant sand dunes in Iran are located near the hottest place on earth, Gandom Beryan. Surface temperature is measured on average up to 70.56 degrees Celsius in the desert Dasht-e Lut, where the Rig-e Yalan dune is located.
Badain Jaran dunes are 500m high in China; they become the most stable dunes in the world. Despite the windy conditions, the sand-dunes here are fixed in one location by groundwater. Like Mingsha Shan, the Badain Jaran dunes are also known for the echoing-sand phenomenon. The sound is created when the top layer of sand impacts the underlying layer of sand the whenever the wind blows.
Cerro Madanoso, located in the desert Atacaman, Chile, is the second highest dune in the world. It is 550m high. Atacaman desert is known as the planet’s driest place with average rainfall of only one milliliter / year, even some areas in the desert, there is no rainfall from 1570 to 1971.
There are many beautiful sand-dunes in the world, but not sand-dune is as high and grandiose as Cerro Blanco, located in the Nazca Valley, Peru, far 482km from Lima. This sand-dune is 1176m high.
